BDS (Otago), MB BS (Adel), FRACDS (OMS), Specialist Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon
Dr Zahi Khouri is a male Specialist Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon.
I initially completed my dental degree at the University of Otago in New Zealand in 1988 (which is where I was born, and yes, I’m a Kiwi!!). I spent two years as a senior house surgeon at the Dunedin Public Hospital within the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Unit. Following this I went to the United Kingdom for a couple of years to gain wider experience in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. I worked as a surgical registrar in the National Health Service (NHS) in Hampshire, Surrey, Wales and London.
On returning to New Zealand I decided to try general dental practice, largely limited to minor oral surgery. I did this for several years, however, given my passion for oral and maxillofacial surgery I pursued my professional career ambitions.
So, I completed a medical degree at the University of Adelaide, South Australia and then four more years of advanced surgical training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in South Australia. I spent a year working as a Junior Doctor in South Australia at the old RAH.
I was granted my specialist qualification in Medicine and Dentistry in 2011 as a specialist Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon and registered with AHPRA as a medical and dental specialist.
I have spent many years as a visiting specialist consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon at the new Royal Adelaide Hospital / new Adelaide Dental Hospital before family commitments became more of a priority for me. While at the Royal Adelaide Hospital I was involved in teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate students in dentistry and medicine, including the full scope of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery to surgical trainees.
My particular surgical interests are in dental implants, dentoalveolar surgery, oral pathology, facial trauma, and orthognathic surgery. I also perform jaw reconstructions when required to do so. I do however, practice the full scope of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
