Dr Matt Hunter is a male Specialist Periodontist who speaks French and German (as well as English).
Dr Matthew Hunter is a London trained specialist in periodontology. He has completed 16 years of graduate and post-graduate education and completes over two hundred hours a year in continuing professional development and training in the speciality of periodontics. He qualified from University College Hospital, UCL, the University of London in 1991. He completed an Honours degree in Anatomy at University College London in two years in 1986, after being awarded a full Medical Research Council (MRC) Scholarship after pre-clinical dentistry. During this he attended final year pre-clinical medicine before studying pure Anatomy. His final year theses were on dental pulp (first class) and the initial study on three dimensional analysis of bone tissue in humans. Whilst an undergraduate he won the international competition for the Harty Medal of the British Society of Endodontics. He received a first in the Prosthetics Essay and Operative technique. He completed his primaries at the Royal College of Surgeons of England with a first in physiology. He then entered general practice for three years and continued practising as a busy dentist until qualifying as a specialist. He was appointed House Surgeon in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery to Roehampton Hospital, London, a unit pioneering facial trauma, burns, plating and reconstructive tumour surgery. Following this he continued training as Senior House Surgeon in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Northampton and Kettering Hospitals on the Oxford rotation. He then worked at UCL Hospital at the Eastman’s Oral Pathology unit as PhD student researching genetic repair of tissue engineered oral cancers.
He was awarded by examination in Oral Maxillofacial surgery and Oral Medicine a full Fellowship in Dental Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeon of England. This enabled entry to restorative mono-specialist training and Dr Hunter was appointed to a Specialist registrar position completed first a Masters in Periodontology then Masters in Clinical Dentistry Periodontology at Guys, Kings and St.Thomas’s Hospital, Kings College, the University of London which is is a thousand year old international five star graded hospital During his second Masters degree he trained initial and final year dental students at Guys and StThomas’s in Periodontics. His thesis was the designing of gene probes to study variations and class switching in antibiotic resistance genes when treating Aggressive Periodontitis. He then was examined and was admitted to be the higher Fellow of Dental Surgery in Periodontics at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 2003, and by examination to a full Membership, in Restorative Dentistry, at the Royal College of Surgeons of England. This examination is applied to UK dual masters graduates and examines in full all specialist restorative subjects. His final specialist assessment noted a rare grading of exceptional surgical skill. He received his Completion Certificate of Specialist training from the UK General Dental Council in 2003,
He immediately ran the postgraduate periodontal specialist training program at Westmead hospital for 4 years, as the staff specialist for Western Sydney Health Authority, and as Senior Lecturer in Periodontics the University of Sydney. He also trained about 800 undergraduates. He conducted research in antigen presenting cells in pockets and taught stem cell and tissue engineering to oral medicine and pathology postgraduate masters students . He currently work as a specialist periodontist, and teaches over 100 hours of post-graduate microsurgery and regenerative applications to dental groups. Professionally his main interest is regenerative microsurgery, implant surgery, anti-microbial therapy for biofilms and tissue engineering. He is a registered Apple software developer and has written clinical software and three dimensional anatomical software for many years. He is a specialist member of the British Society of Periodontology, The American Academy of Periodontology and the European Association of Osseo-integration. He is a committed specialist reservist for the Royal Australian Air Force.He is the Australian global alumnus for the London Goodenough College and Trust for Commonwealth postgraduates.
At home he spends most time with his family, he is married to a fashion designer and milliner and they have three small children. He enjoys podcasts, classical music, gardening and reading about renaissance history.
