BDS (Liverpool), General Dentist
Dr Colin R Priestland is a male General Dentist.
Colin qualified as a dentist in 1980 at the University of Liverpool and immediately showed an interest in oral surgery working as an oral surgery house surgeon.
Dr Priestland has worked in various areas of dentistry, including restorative and implant dentistry and has studied under consultants in oral and maxillofacial surgery and restorative dentistry. This has provided him with a breadth of experience that enables him to treat and plan complex cases involving a multidisciplinary approach to patient care.
In 1989 Colin passed the Membership in General Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and a Master of Science in Periodontology degree at the Eastman Dental Institute, London 1989-1990. Surgical implant training followed in 1994 through the International Team for Implantology (ITI). Colin completed his accreditation as a Specialist in Periodontology in the UK and was registered as Periodontist in the European Union. In 2002 he attended the University of Berne, Switzerland completing the ITI Master Course under Professors Daniel Buser and Nicklaus Lang. Later in 2002 he moved from Germany to Australia and registered as a dentist working in Townsville.
After his Oral Surgery House Surgeon appointment, he joined the Royal Navy and worked in a number of establishments, hospitals, and ships. He gained considerable experience in surgical procedures and in particular the removal of wisdom teeth. He studied and qualified in intravenous sedation while serving at the British Military Hospital, Hong Kong in 1986 and has been using this wonderful technique to help patients through their surgical procedures since that time. He is accredited by the Australian Health Practitioner Registration Agency in dental sedation.
Dr Priestland was one of the first dental surgeons in Australia to use Piezo-bone surgery for the placement of implants and harvesting block bone grafts. This new and exciting development allows bone surgery to take place without causing damage to the bone and achieves faster healing after surgery and therefore implants can be used to support crowns, bridges, and dentures after a shorter healing period. Patients also suffer far less post-operative discomfort and swelling.
Colin attends regular national and international conferences and practical courses not only to maintain his current levels of skill and expertise in his field but also to allow the introduction into his practice of new technology and improvements in methods of patient care. He encourages all his team to take an active part in ongoing professional education and sees this as a very important way in which the team can maintain their professional reputation.
