Dr Ben Karim grew up in Sydney, where he completed his dental education. He graduated from Sydney University in 2003 with his undergraduate dental degree. Following on from this, as a graduate dentist, he decided to undertake specialist training in the field of Oral Medicine and completed his clinical doctorate from the University of Sydney in 2010.
His post-graduate research was on the epidemiology of bisphosphonate medication use and has a variety of academic interests within the speciality. He is heavily involved in the education of undergraduate and postgraduate students at Sydney University and has lectured widely, including at the national Australian Dental Association Congress.
Dr Karim is the Head of Department of Oral Medicine at Westmead Hospital. Prior to this, he held a position as a Staff Specialist in Oral Medicine at the Sydney Dental Hospital for seven years. Dr Karim is an Honorary Associate of the Faculty of Dentistry at Sydney University, and a Fellow of the Oral Medicine Academy of Australasia.
Dr Karim worked with Dr Tame at Sydney Dental Hospital for many years and joined the practice in 2021 to re-connect and establish the excellent synergistic relationship between Oral Surgery and Oral Medicine at ECOS. This allows more patients with oral pathology (lumps, bumps, lesions, facial pain and dry mouth) to be helped and treated in our rooms. Dr Karim therefore collaborates with our surgeons to ensure our patients get the best and most appropriate treatment and advice. He is very friendly and approachable and will work closely with referring dentists and doctors.
