He has lectured extensively in national and international meetings and conferences, and has been involved in professional organisations at all levels. He is a Past President of The Australian and New Zealand Academy of Periodontists (ANZAP), which is the national organisation of the specialty. His research has resulted in numerous publications and he has also been a supervisor for several research projects undertaken by postgraduate students at UWA leading to specialisation.

Above all, Dr Tan believes in the importance of periodontal and oral health, as an integral part of good general health. Treatment of periodontal conditions, and subsequently the maintenance of periodontal health in a caring and friendly environment is the ultimate objective of the practice.
